The Mekong Club launches the Business Pledge Against Modern Slavery

The Mekong Club launched the Business Pledge against Modern Slavery this week in Hong Kong

What is the Business Pledge Against Modern Slavery?

The Pledge is a short anti-slavery statement, supplemented by ten categories for action to track over time. The commitment has to go beyond words, so each signatory company’s effort is independently – and confidentially – assessed. An aggregated score indicating the efforts of the overall business community taking part in the Pledge will then be made public. The process is designed to support companies who are doing the right thing and to encourage others to follow suit.

Why a Pledge?

There are over 40 million people in modern slavery in the world today and, collectively, the world is only helping 0.2% of the victims. Part of the reason why success is so low resides with the fact that, while the majority of modern slavery cases are related to forced labour in supply chains, the private sector has not been involved in addressing this issue. The Mekong Club’s purpose is to engage and inspire companies to lead in this fight. The Business Pledge Against Modern Slavery initiative is part of this mission, as it offers a clear and systematic way for companies to assess their efforts to fight modern slavery.

“With this corporate pledge, the private sector in Hong Kong is once again stepping up and demonstrating its commitment to address the issue of modern slavery in a positive, proactive, supportive way. In this way, Hong Kong is a leader in offering a business response to this terrible crime against humanity.”  Matt Friedman, CEO, Mekong Club.
