Several European countries have enacted human rights due diligence laws targeting issues like forced labor. This article analyzes France’s Corporate Duty of Vigilance Law, Germany’s Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, and the EU’s new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, noting their requirements for risk assessments, preventative measures, reporting, enforcement and liability. As Canada signals its intention to introduce similar legislation by 2024, the article advises Canadian businesses to understand these frameworks to gain insight into potential future obligations and ensure compliance with evolving European procurement practices.
