Forced labour camps in Southeast Asia have enabled criminal groups to profit immensely from online fraud schemes run through hundreds of thousands of trafficked workers who are forced to carry out romance and investment scams that have stolen over $64 billion in the past three years. The criminal operations have grown into a multibillion-dollar industry aided by cryptocurrency exchanges laundering over $75 billion in proceeds, weak governance allows military factions and corrupt officials to harbour the syndicates, and international cooperation remains lacking.
