Hundreds of children identified as potential victims of human trafficking are being left unsupported and vulnerable to further exploitation once they turn 18, according to new Home Office data. Over 1,800 young victims “dropped off” the UK government’s victim identification and support system, which is the National Referral Mechanism, last year alone. The Home Office acknowledged the issue, stating their commitment to combatting child exploitation and mentioning the introduction of independent child trafficking guardianship services. They clarified that the NRM process requires the consent of adults, and if a referred child reaches adulthood, their consent is necessary for the process to continue.
