The UK’s Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline received a record 11,700 calls in 2023, a 19% increase from the previous year. Alarmingly, the charity Unseen, which runs the helpline, reported emerging trends like forced surrogacy and a surge in labour exploitation cases within the adult social care sector. India topped the list of nationalities of potential victims for the first time, overtaking Romania. As the UK grapples with these heinous crimes, the government faces criticism for prioritizing illegal migration over tackling modern slavery, underscoring the urgent need for victim support and robust anti-trafficking strategies.
